Dementieva saw off Sharapova 6-4 6-3 to claim her 14th career singles title.

Sharapova came into the tournament unseeded, but she beat number seven seed Vera Zvonareva, number 10 seed Nadia Petrova and number 14 seed Agnieszka Radwanska on her way to reaching her first WTA Tour final since returning in May after a nine-month injury lay-off.

"It was a really great week for me. Playing six matches was great leading up to the U.S. Open. This was really good preparation," Dementieva told reporters.

Dementieva has also won titles in Sydney and Auckland this year but has not had much success against Sharapova over the years.

It was just her third win over Sharapova in 12 career meetings and first in three years. Her last win was in the semifinals of the 2006 Los Angeles event.
