(CNN) -- Top seed Dinara Safina is through to the second round of the French Open at Roland Garros after crushing British number one Anne Keothavong without losing a single game.
Safina proved a class apart as she strolled into the second round at Roland Garros.
Safina, the 2008 runner-up who is bidding to win her maiden Grand Slam title, will now face fellow-Russiant Vitalia Diatchenko for a place in the last 32 after her 6-0 6-0 whitewash.
World number 48 Keothavong became the first British woman in 26 years to reach the semifinals of a WTA clay-court event in Warsaw last week.
However, she was outclassed by the world number one in just over an hour on another blistering hot day on center court.
Third seed Venus Williams, who has never won in Paris, is also through to the second round, but the Wimvledon champion looked far from impressive in desposing of fellow-American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 4-6 6-2.
Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova made a winning return to Grand Slam tennis when she came from behind to beat Belarus' Anastasiya Yakimova 3-6 6-1 6-2.
The Russian former world number one, who underwent surgery on her right shoulder last August and only returned to singles action in Warsaw last week, was contesting her first Grand Slam match since a second-round defeat to fellow-Russian Alla Kudryavtseva at last year's Wimbledon Championships.
Elsewhere in the women's draw, 15th seed Zheng Jie of China saw off home player Stephanie Cohen-Aloro 6-1 6-3, while Polona Hercog of Slovenia shocked Russian 23rd seed Alisa Kleybanova 6-2 4-6 6-1.
