Russian Safina is looking impressive in her first tournament as the new world number one.

The Russian, who blitzed Italian 6-0 6-1 in the first round, took just over an hour to seed of Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4 6-2 and will now face eighth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska for a place in the semifinals.

Earlier defending champion and third seed Jelena Jankovic was made to fight by teenage German Sabine Lisicki, before securing her place in the last eight.

The Serb had to dig deep against her world-ranked 42nd opponent, and also a partisan home crowd, before eventually prevailing 7-5 5-7 6-3 in a two-hour 13 minute marathon.

Olympic champion Elena Dementieva, seeded second, also secured her place in the draw with a 7-6 6-1 victory over Hungary's Agnes Szavay.

The 27-year-old Russian will play Marion Bartoli for a place in the semifinals after the 24-year-old Frenchwoman saw off seventh seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 7-6 6-4.

Fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova made it a great day for the leading players, although she had to recover after dropping the opening set to defeat China's Li Na 4-6 6-4 7-5.
