(CNN) -- Wimbledon champion and former winner Venus Williams has crashed out in the third round of the Family Circle clay-court event in Charleston, South Carolina, losing in straight sets to Sabine Lisicki.

Former winner Venus Williams never looked comfortable as she crashed out of the Family Circle tournament.

Former winner Venus Williams never looked comfortable as she crashed out of the Family Circle tournament.

Second seed Williams, the winner here five years ago, conceded five double faults and looked far from comfortable as she lost 6-4 7-6 to the 16th-seeded German.

Defeat meant Venus was unable to keep the title in the family after younger sister Serena won here in 2008.

In other matches, French sixth seed Marion Bartoli eased past American Melanie Oudin 6-4 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Former Wimbledon finalist Bartoli will now face either Russian fourth seed Nadia Petrova or Melinda Czink of Hungary for a place in the last four of the tournament.
