(CNN) -- Some of the world's top minds came together recently to encourage a crowd of nongovernmental organizations, government and diplomatic groups to think globally in terms of economic, political and environmental policies.

"We need a new mind-set. The world is converging," Hans Rosling, an economist at the Swedish Karolinska Institute, told attendees of the U.S. State Department's TED@State conference on June 3. "This is not the State Department. It's the world department. And we have high hope in you."

The U.S. State Department's Global Partnership Initiative was host of the event, the first of its kind to utilize the resources of the nonprofit TED, which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. TED holds annual conferences that bring together thinkers and doers from various disciplines to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes.

Each speaker brought insight and expertise from their field in discussions ranging from genetically modified foods to the effectiveness of popular elections.
