(CNN) -- Two British marines and a Danish soldier have been killed in Afghanistan.
The Royal Marines were on patrol Sunday when their vehicle was "caught in an explosion," the Ministry of Defence said Monday. They were members of the Royal Marines 40 Commando, the ministry said.
The explosion happened near Kajaki in the southern Helmand province, a region of high poppy production and frequent clashes between NATO soldiers and a resurgent Taliban.
The Danish soldier was killed and two others wounded Monday in a battle with Taliban forces in Afghanistan, the Danish Army said.
An army spokeswoman said the combat took place in Helmand Province, just northeast of the town of Geresht.
The two wounded soldiers are in stable condition, the army said. The death brings to 14 the number of Danish troops killed in the Afghanistan war.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force issued a statement saying one soldier was killed and two others "were evacuated to the ISAF medical facilities by emergency response helicopters where they are being treated."
In the statement, Lt. Col. Sarto LeBlanc, spokesman for Regional Command South, said, "Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the soldier who died today." E-mail to a friend ![]()
