PARIS, France (CNN) -- Eight people were killed Thursday when an Italian military helicopter crashed in the countryside in northeastern France, according to area officials and the Italian government.
The crash occurred about 4:30 p.m. (1430 GMT) near Lisle-en-Barrois, a village in Meuse department, said Alexandra Petit, a spokeswoman for the Lisle-en-Barrois Regional Authority. Everyone on board the helicopter was killed, she said.
The Italian Defence Ministry said in a statement that eight Italian servicemen in the air force had died in a "tragic incident" involving an HH3F helicopter in France.
Italian Minister of Defense Ignazio la Russa expressed his condolences to the victims' families, the statement said.
