SRINAGAR, Indian-Controlled Kashmir (CNN) -- A bridge collapsed in Indian-administered Kashmir Sunday morning, sending at least two dozen laborers into a swollen river below, according to a senior police official.
At least 23 workers were feared dead. Two people were pulled alive from the river, which was swollen from recent heavy rain and snowfall, the police official said.
The center of the bridge, which was in the final stage of construction, collapsed suddenly, he said.
The bridge was built near the border village of Uri over the Jhelum River, which flows into neighboring Pakistan, he said.
While officials were not certain how many workers were on the bridge, they believe at least 23 were still missing. Along with the two rescued, the bodies of three people were also pulled from the river, he said.
