(CNN) -- A roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan killed four members of the U.S.-led coalition and an Afghan national on Wednesday morning, a U.S. military statement said.
The names and nationalities of the coalition members were not immediately available from the military. The attack is under investigation.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, saying it took place in Paktika province and killed four American soldiers.
The Taliban, former rulers of Afghanistan, have shown a resurgence in heated battles against multi-national forces across the country.
With more than three months left in 2008, it has already been the deadliest year for U.S. casualties since the war started nearly seven years ago.
