(CNN) -- Tainted baby formula has sickened at least 50 Chinese infants, resulting in one death and prompting a nationwide investigation, according to China's state-run news agency.

Sanlu Group, a leading dairy producer in China, recalled about 700 tons of its baby milk powder formula after discovering the product was contaminated with tripolycyanamide, a chemical believed to cause kidney stones, the Xinhua news agency reported.

China's Health Ministry said inspectors at Sanlu's Hebei Province factory were conducting tests and that those found to be responsible face "heavy punishment." Chinese officials will also check milk powders made by other companies, Xinhua reported
