BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Three people were killed and about 100 were hurt after an earthquake struck southwestern China, state-run news reports said Friday.

Authorities evacuated about 3,400 after the quake struck Yingjiang County in Yunnan province, near China's border with Myanmar, according to a report in the Xinhua news agency.

The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck about 8:24 p.m. local time Thursday (about 8:24 a.m. ET Thursday), about 580 miles (930 km) north of Yangon, Myanmar, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

A state-run newspaper, China Daily, said 20 people suffered serious injuries. It also said the quake affected the livelihoods of about 14,000 people. Video Watch images of quake damage »

China's neighboring Sichuan province is still recovering from the effects of devastating 7.9 magnitude quake in May that left 70,000 people dead. More than 18,000 people are still listed as missing in the disaster.
