ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A missile fired from an unidentified location struck a house in Pakistan on Sunday, killing 20 and critically injuring five others, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported Sunday.
That report raises the death toll reported earlier by state-run television, which said the blast killed 16 and wounded seven. The Associated Press of Pakistan said three missiles were fired while state-run television put the number at seven.
The Pakistani military confirmed a blast Sunday but released no further details.
Both state-run news outlets said the strike happened in South Waziristan, a region along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan that is rife with Islamic extremists.
A CIA airstrike in Pakistan's border region killed a senior al Qaeda leader recently, three U.S. officials told CNN in January. And in February, a missile strike killed eight suspected militants along the border, Pakistan's state-run media reported, but U.S. officials denied involvement. E-mail to a friend ![]()
