NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- The alleged mastermind of a kidney transplant scheme in India has been arrested, a Nepalese minister of state told CNN.

Ram Kumar Chaudhary said that the suspect, Dr. Amit Kumar, was carrying $145,000 in U.S. dollars and a check for another 900,000 euros when he was taken into custody within the past day in the Nepalese town of Saurah, 150 km south of Kathmandu.

He was arrested by a special team of Kathmandu police and taken to a regional police station in Hetauda, Chaudhary said.

Kumar is accused of coercing, stealing or buying a kidney from healthy Indians and then selling them to foreigners for transplant.

Several doctors have been accused of taking part in the scheme, Chaudhary said.

Police in India have said that as many as 500 people may have given up a kidney up to the ring. Some told CNN they were forced to do so and not compensated. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
