(CNN) -- An explosion and ambush has killed eight soldiers in southern Thailand, an Army spokesman said.

The explosion happened as an Army unit was returning to their base camp after providing security to teachers, said Col. Akcra Tiproj, an Army spokesman.
It happened about 9:40 a.m. local time Monday (9:40 p.m. E.T. Sunday), Tiproj told CNN.
Initial reports from military radio said the explosion killed eight soldiers, he said.
