The explosion happened as an Army unit was returning to their base camp after providing security to teachers, said Col. Akcra Tiproj, an Army spokesman.

It happened about 9:40 a.m. local time Monday (9:40 p.m. E.T. Sunday), Tiproj told CNN.

Initial reports from military radio said the explosion killed eight soldiers, he said.
