MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Tropical Storm Fausto strengthened early Thursday well off the coast of the Mexican resort city of Acapulco, while Hurricane Elida weakened as it moved away from Baja California in the Pacific.

Neither storm was expected to threaten land.

Fausto's winds strengthened to 60 mph (95 kph) early Thursday, up from 45 mph (70 kph) late Wednesday. Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center expect the storm to continue to strengthen and possibly become a hurricane in about a day or so.

The storm was moving west near 14 mph (22 kph), and its center was about 510 miles (825 kilometers) south of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Elida was a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 100 mph (160 kph), down from 105 mph (165 kph) late Wednesday. It was 895 miles (1,435 kilometers) west-southwest of the tip of Baja California and moving west at 16 mph (26 kph).

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Bertha was headed out over open ocean and away from the U.S. mainland, after battering Bermuda.

By early Thursday, the storm weakened to sustained winds of 60 mph (97 kph), down from 70 mph (113 kph) late Wednesday.
