Massive fire burns at air base

(CNN) -- Hundreds of vacant homes remained under threat Saturday from a raging fire that has wreaked havoc on a California air force base.

The blaze started as a grass fire outside the main entrance to Travis Air Force Base about 3 p.m., said Fairfield Fire Marshal Morgana Yahnke.

Wind blew the fire onto the base, setting more than 125 homes on fire.

The homes were vacant and set for demolition, Yahnke said. Another 300 vacant houses were threatened as of 7 p.m.

About 125 surrounding households were told to keep their doors and windows shut to prevent smoke inhalation.

There were no reports of injuries.

Aerial footage of the scene showed the fire rapidly burning through buildings as smoke billowed across the northwest section of the base base, which sits to the east of Fairfield.

Yahnke said that 150 firefighters were dispatched from all over Solano County, about 60 miles northeast of San Francisco, to control the fire.
