Paris has hotels for every taste, whether you fancy the old-school gilded opulence of the famous Four Seasons George V (Avenue George-V , doubles from €695 a night), uber-chic Marais hangout Murano Urban Resort (Boulevard du Temple, doubles from €360), or the dilapidated charm of the Left Bank's Hotel Esmeralda (Rue St-Julien-le-Pauvre, doubles from €80, tel: +33 (0)1 43 54 19 20).

Moderately priced hotels sit around the basicala of Sacre-Coeur de Montmartre , a favourite with tourists

Other moderately priced favourites include Hotel des Arts, located in Montmartre between the glowing dome of Sacre-Coeur and the red-lit streets of Pigalle (Rue Tholozé, double rooms from €81) and Hotel Turenne Le Marais, between the Marais and Bastille districts, (Rue de Turenne, doubles from €119).

If hotels seem too impersonal, pretend you're a real Parisian by staying with some bona fide locals. Good Morning Paris offers a host of charming B&Bs, all chosen for their location, comfort and charm. Doubles start from €69 per night (with shared bathroom), rising to €99 per night for a triple room with private bathroom.

Another good choice, especially if you're traveling with friends or planning to stay longer than a couple of nights, is an apartment. Good Morning Paris has apartments sleeping two to four people from €106 per night, but there are hundreds of others available. Try Isabelle's Apartments -- a collection of bijou studios and larger apartments starting from around €660 per week.
