(CNN) -- The big clubs in Spain and Italy were given rude awakenings, as the Primera Liga and Serie A finally got under way. Here, on CNN.com, we'll be bringing you a weekly review of all the previous weekend's action.

Spanish Primera Liga

Numancia players celebrates their shock opening day 1-0 victory over Barcelona.

Barcelona and Real Madrid both suffered surprise opening day defeats as the new Spanish season kicked off in sensational fashion.

Pep Guardiola's first match as Barca coach ended in disappointment at newly- promoted Numancia, who took the points with Mario's 12th minute goal.

Madrid have not won at Deportivo La Coruna for 15 years, and that run continued with a 2-1 defeat at the Riazor. Alberto Lopo bagged the winner for the Galicians shortly after Ruud van Nistelrooy had cancelled out Mista's first-half strike.

There were no such worries for city rivals Atletico Madrid, who thrashed Malaga 4-0 at the Vicente Calderon. Diego Forlan netted twice while new boys John Heitinga and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both scored on their debuts.

Valencia began their campaign with a resounding 3-0 victory over Mallorca at the Mestalla to extinguish the memory of their embarrassing Supercup collapse against nine-man Real Madrid last weekend.

First-half headers from David Villa and Juan Manuel Mata put Los Che firmly in control before substitute Vicente poked home a third goal from close range

Getafe left it late but ultimately got coach Victor Munoz's reign off to a winning start with a 2-1 triumph at newly-promoted Sporting Gijon -- Javi Casquero's 86th-minute strike proving decisive. Almeria also began life under a new coach, Gonzalo Arconada, with an impressive victory 3-1 at Athletic Bilbao.

Marco Ruben scored the only goal of the game as Recreativo Huelva prevailed 1-0 at Real Betis, while Racing Santander missed a penalty through Ezequiel Garay but came back to earn a 1-1 draw point against Sevilla.

Osasuna came from a goal down to snatch a deserved 1-1 draw against Villarreal in a bad-tempered game which saw both sides finish with 10 men.

Espanyol kicked off with a win for the first time in seven seasons as they beat Valladolid 1-0 through Luis Garcia's second-half strike.

Italian Serie A

Jose Mourinho's league debut as Inter Milan coach saw the three-times champions held 1-1 at Sampdoria -- as none of the traditional top four teams began the season with three points.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for Inter despite appearing to handle the ball, but Gennaro Delvecchio drew things level for the hosts.

Meanwhile, last year's runners-up Roma were also held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Napoli, who had defender Fabiano Santacroce sent off in the 54th minute.

Ronaldinho's AC Milan debut ended in disappointment at the San Siro as newly-promoted Bologna ran out 2-1 winners.

Francesco Valiano fired home a superb winner for the visitors after Maro Di Vaio's opener was cancelled out by Massimo Ambrosini.

Alberto Gilardino endeared himself to his new Fiorentina fans with a last -gasp equalizer to help La Viola claim a 1-1 home draw with Juventus, for whom Pavel Nedved opened the scoring.

Elsewhere, Torino cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lecce in Turin, while Lazio came from behind to beat 10-man Cagliari 4-1 in Sardinia, taking pole position in Serie A after the opening round of matches.

Atalanta and Catania secured 1-0 home wins over Siena and Genoa respectively, while Chievo beat Reggina 2-1 in Verona on their return to the top flight. Udinese were also winners on the opening day, securing a 3-1 victory over Palermo.

English Premier League

Chelsea continue to lead the table, despite being held to a 1-1 home draw by Tottenham, who are still waiting for their first win of the season.

Darren Bent levelled for Spurs on the stroke of half time after Juliano Belletti had put the home side ahead.

Liverpool are level with Chelsea on seven points despite being held 0-0 at Aston Villa, while newly-wealthy Manchester City are third as Shaun Wright-Phillips scored twice on his return to the club from Chelsea in a 3-0 victory at Sunderland.

Arsenal finally found some form as Robin van Persie's double helped them defeat Newcastle 3-0 in Kevin Keegan's final match in charge of the Magpies.

It was a bad day for the newly-promoted clubs as Hull were thrashed 5-0 at home by Wigan, with Egyptian striker Amr Zaki netting twice, while Stoke went down 2-1 at Middlesbrough for whom Turkish international Tuncay scored a late winner.

The third promoted side, West Bromwich Albion, are bottom of the table with a single point after a battling 0-0 draw at Bolton.

French Ligue One

Marseille went top of the table after goals from Karim Ziani and Bakary Kone secured a 2-1 home win over Sochaux. A Karim Benzema goal secured Lyon a 1-0 win at local rivals Saint-Etienne and the defending champions, who have yet to concede a goal this season, trail Marseille only on goals scored.

Le Mans and Nice won for the third time in four matches to continue their profitable start to the season -- and they both lie a point behind the leading duo.

Le Mans rallied from a goal down to beat Nantes 4-1, while Nice needed second-half strikes from Habib Bamogo and Loic Remy to beat Valenciennes 2-0.

Grenoble spoiled Monaco's unbeaten record with a 1-0 victory to also move onto nine points in their impressive start to top-flight life.

Turkish Super League

Four clubs share the lead in Turkey with maximum points after two matches, but traditional powerhouses Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are not amongst them.

Besiktas, Bursaspor, Trabzonspor and Gaziantepspor are all in six points after victories at the weekend.

Trabzonspor won 2-1 at Ankaragucu on Friday evening, while Besiktas were 2-0 victors over Konyaspor on Monday evening.

Bursapor continued their fine start with a 2-0 home success over Genclerbirligi, while Gaziantepspor won at Ankaraspor -- also by 2-0.

Galatasary drew 0-0 at Kayserispor to lie fifth while Fenerbahce recovered from their opening day defeat at Gaziantepspor to see off Buyuksehir 2-0.

Scottish Premier League

The big match in Scotland saw Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers slug it out for the first time this season, with the blue half of Glasgow celebrating as Rangers came away from Celtic Park with a stunning 4-2 win.

Former Celtic striker Kenny Miller incurred the wrath of the home fans by scoring twice for the visitors in a titanic tussle which saw both sides end the game with 10 men.

The victory sees Rangers lead the table with 10 points from their four matches, level with Kilmarnock -- who won 2-0 at Dundee United.

Hearts continued their fine start to the season with a third victory in four matches, 2-1 at Hamilton, to lie third, with Celtic are back in fourth after their defeat.

At the foot of the table, Falkirk remain rooted to the bottom without a single point from their four matches after a 2-1 home defeat by Inverness.

Dutch Eredivisie

The opening day of the Dutch season saw champions PSV Eindhoven post their intentions for the new season with a 5-1 thrashing of Utrecht.

Dutch international striker Ibrahim Affelay scored twice as PSV already head the table. However, they were not the only team to score five away from home, as Den Haag cruised to a 5-2 success at Sparta Rotterdam -- Richard Knopper scoring twice.

Elsewhere, Ajax slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Willem II, despite taking a first-half lead through new signing Miralem Sulejmani. Their cause was not helped by the late dismissal of another new boy, Evander Sno.

Feyenoord took a first minute lead at Heracles before slumping 3-1, while AZ Alkmaar also surprisingly lost -- 2-1 at home to NAC Breda.
