The 29-year-old winger put pen to paper on a two-year contract on Saturday.

Kewell turned down a contract offer from Liverpool in May and entered the current transfer window as a free agent.

He was reported to be heading to Celtic, Italy`s Roma or Premier League side Portsmouth, but Galatasaray swooped first.

"I'm ecstatic, I'm thrilled to bits and looking forward to the new challenge," said Kewell. "I can't wait to join the team and get going.

"There's a lot of talk about the Turkish league, it's coming up in the world. The national team has done well in the last couple of international tournaments and there's a lot of young talent here. It's different and that's what I'm looking forward to -- the new challenge," added the Australian.

Kewell spent five seasons with Liverpool and, although injuries kept him out of action for long periods, he gained a Champions League winners medal in the memorable fightback victory over AC Milan in 2005.

Even in that game he went off with a torn abductor muscle in the first half.

When Kewell was at Leeds United he played against Galatasaray in the semifinal of the 2000 UEFA Cup but was sent off.
