(CNN) -- French champions Lyon have confirmed the sale of veteran international goalkeeper Gregory Coupet to Atletico Madrid.

Coupet played in all three matches as France crashed out in the group stages of the Euro 2008 finals.

The Primera Liga side have paid in the region of 1.5 million euros for the 35-year-old, who played in all three of France's Euro 2008 finals matches.

Coupet had been set to sign for Atletico last week following successful talks --but the move hit a hitch over the transfer fee.

Coupet had a clause in his contract, which ran until 2010, allowing him to leave Lyon -- with whom he has won seven straight league titles -- for three million euros. However, the Spanish side have finally got their man for half that price.

Atletico will pay an extra 500,000 euros if Coupet helps them qualify for the Champions League in the next two seasons.

This year they will participate in the final qualifying round of the competition.
