(CNN) -- Italian defender Andrea Barzagli has had a successful knee operation after suffering a training injury during the Euro 2008 finals.
Barzagli should be fit to resume training in a fortnight.
The Wolfsburg defender damaged his left knee during preparations for Sunday's quarterfinal against Spain.
Head of the tournament medical team, Dr Gabler, said: " The operation took 30 minutes and was a resounding success. Andrea Barzagli should be able to resume training in a fortnight."
Dr Gabler combined with Italian team surgeon Andrea Ferretti on the operation.
Barzagli, a former Palermo captain and a member of the 2006 World Cup winning squad, played in the opening 3-0 defeat by the Netherlands.
Italy are now short of central defenders, being left with youngster Giorgio Chiellini, Alessandro Gamberini - called up in place of injured Fabio Cannavaro - and Marco Materazzi, who lost his place after the opening-game drubbing by the Dutch.
Against the Spanish Chiellini, 23, is again likely to be paired with the 35-year-old Christian Panucci, as happened against Romania and France.
