MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United have transferred Spanish defender Gerard Pique back to his former club Barcelona.
Pique had few first-team opportunities because of the consistency of Ferdianand and Vidic.
Pique, 21, was signing a four-year contract with the club he left four years ago to join United.
Trafford, because the defensive pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic became established as clear first choice for Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pique's move to Spain fits in with new Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola's plans to include more local players in his team.
The fee is reported to be worth around $11.86m
