NEWCASTLE, England -- Newcastle United's Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Shay Given could miss the rest of the season if he needs another operation to clear up his latest groin problem.

Given had to come off halfway through Saturday's home loss to Manchester United.
He suffered an injury against Aston Villa a fortnight ago and aggravated it during the first half of Saturday's defeat by Manchester United. He had to be replaced by Steve Harper.
He is definitely unfit for this weekend's match against Blackburn Rovers and will see a specialist this week.
Given's groin problems began when he was involved in a collision with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood, which left him with a perforated bowel in September 2006. E-mail to a friend ![]()
