GLASGOW, Scotland -- Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has failed with an appeal against his sending-off in Sunday's Scottish Cup fifth-round tie against Hibernian at Easter Road.

McGregor will miss the replay against Hibernianbecause of his ban.

McGregor was shown the red card by referee Craig Thomson when he brought down Dean Shiels just outside the penalty area, shortly before the end of the goalless draw.

Rangers claimed that McGregor had touched the ball as he made the challenge.

A statement on the the Scottish FA's official Web site said that the referee, after viewing footage of the match, had "indicated that he is content with his decision to send the player off".

The verdict means that McGregor misses the replay, scheduled for Tuesday March 4, if Rangers are knocked out of the UEFA Cup this month by Panathinaikos.

If Rangers beat the Greeks, the replay will be on quarterfinals day - Saturday, March 8.

The winners would then face Partick Thistle or Livingston on Wednesday March 19. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
