(CNN) -- Jean-Paul Duminy scored his maiden Test century and shared a remarkable ninth wicket partnership with Dale Steyn as South Africa took command against Australia in Melbourne.

Newcomer Duminy batted superbly to reach his maiden Test century.
The South Africans led by 61 runs at the end of the third day of the second Test after Duminy (166) and Steyn (76) put on a record stand of 180.
It helped them to an improbable first innings total of 459, having resumed overnight on 198 for seven and looking set for a big deficit.
But the 24-year-old Duminy found excellent support from Paul Harris in an eighth wicket partnership of 67 and even better from paceman Steyn, who was dropped three times by the shellshocked Aussies.
Duminy, who had hit a classy half century in South Africa's epic first Test win in Perth, showed he is a star of the future with a peerless knock and was last man out after adding 28 with Mathaya Ntini.
Peter Siddle was the pick of a lackluster Australian attack with four wickets for 81 runs, the home side struggling to cope with the loss to injury of star paceman Brett Lee.
Under-pressure opener Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich survived two testing overs to leave the Australians four without loss at stumps at the MCG with a thrilling finish in prospect with two days remaining.
