LONDON, England (CNN) -- BMW Sauber have lauded driver Robert Kubica's first grand prix win, which has pushed him to the head of the drivers' championship after seven races.
BMW's Robert Kubica grabbed his first Formula One win at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Kubica's win in Canada leaves him four points ahead of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Felipe Massa in the race for the drivers' title.
BMW Sauber are now three points behind Ferrari in the race for the constructors' championship, but 17 points ahead of McLaren.
The Pole snatched his chance after Hamilton's McLaren rammed into the back of world champion Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari as the Finn and Kubica were waiting at a red light when the safety car was forced into action on lap 17.
It allowed Kubica the chance to later overtake team-mate Nick Heidfeld, who took the lead after the incident and later finished second, and dominate for the rest of the 70-lap event.
BMW motor sport director Mario Theissen said he was "overwhelmed" by Kubica's win.
"It is difficult to find the right words... we hoped for another podium here in Montreal, but would not have dreamed to get a one-two victory.
"We achieved a milestone. Both drivers worked with no errors and the strategies paid off. I think we will have to celebrate a lot."
BMW technical director Willy Rampf was equally ecstatic.
"I just can't put my feelings into words... both drivers and the entire crew did a perfect job.
"Robert had lost time when he was stuck behind slower cars after the safety car period, but in a fantastic sprint he made up for it and secured himself the race win."
Rampf said it was the pay off the team deserved after making the right decisions on the day and putting in so much work over the past two and a half years.
Indeed it has been a dramatic rise for the team BMW-Sauber team who first raced together as a unit in 2006, finishing a distant fifth in the constructors' championship with 36 points.
They finished second last year, but that was only because McLaren lost their points after being found with Ferrari technical data.
Kubica said he was happy for BMW, Poland and all his fans. He also, cheekily, thanked Hamilton for crashing into Raikkonen.
"I heard the noise when Hamilton crashed into his [Raikkonen] car. I have to be grateful to Lewis as he chose Kimi and not myself."
