HOBART, Tasmania -- Jelena Dokic recorded a long overdue significant tour victory by beating Germany's Martina Muller in the first round of the Hobart International.

Dokic was once ranked number four in the world.

Dokic, once world number four, beat 54th-ranked Muller 6-4 0-6 6-2 and could now have a difficult decision to make.

Dokic is making a comeback after more than two years out with injury and off-court problems and Tennis Australia officials declined to offer her a wildcard into the main draw of the Australian Open.

Women's qualifying starts on Thursday and if Dokic beats Italian Flavia Pennetta in Hobart on Tuesday she must decide between continuing to play in the event or heading to Melbourne to try to earn a place in the Australian Open.

Dokic said she thought she had done enough to deserve a main draw wild card for the Open.

"Based on my previous results and how hard I have worked in the past ... I thought I deserved a wild card," Dokic said Monday. "But I wasn't expecting one."

Dokic said she would play her match against Pennetta and then decide on her next move.

Pennetta advanced to the second round with a 6-4 1-6 6-2 upset over fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

Top seed Alona Bondarenko from Ukraine was made to work hard by Jessica Moore but prevailed 7-5, 6-2.

Fifth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, the runner-up at last week's Australian Women's Hardcourt Championships on the Gold Coast, retired injured against Olga Govortsova.

Number nine seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina also bowed out with a left hip injury in her match against Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
