(CNN) -- Newsman Mike Wallace, 90, underwent triple-bypass surgery last week that his doctors have called a success, CBS News said Tuesday.

Wallace "is recovering nicely and has taken his first steps," a network spokesman said Tuesday.

Wallace has been a correspondent for "60 Minutes" since its premiere in 1968. Two years ago, he stopped appearing regularly on the program, though he still contributes occasional pieces to it and other CBS News broadcasts. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
