BEIJING, China (CNN) -- French fashion house Christian Dior says it is dropping prominent actress Sharon Stone from its advertisements in China after her remarks about the recent devastating earthquake being an act of "karma."

Stone, who made the remarks last week at the Cannes Film Festival, was referring to the May 12 earthquake that has killed more than 68,000 people.

"They're not being nice to the Dalai Lama, who is a friend of mine. And then all of this earthquake and all this happened and I thought, is that karma? When you're not nice, that bad things happen to you?" Stone said on camera.

The statement drew fire from citizens and government officials. Video Watch Stone's remarks and how China reacted »

"We have also noticed that Shar-- what's her name? Sharon Stone . ... She should do more to promote understanding and friendship between nations," said Qin Gang, spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry.

The uproar swept across the Internet.

And Christian Dior, which has widely used Stone's image for years, went into damage control. Representatives from the company said Thursday that the actress will not be featured in their advertising in China.

The company issued a statement from its Shanghai headquarters: "We absolutely disagree with her hasty comments, and we are also deeply sorry about them."

Stone has also apologized for the statement, the company said.
