U.S. presidential hopefuls have been criss-crossing the country for months, hoping to eventually -- in November -- win the general election.
For the 2008 race, Republican John McCain was written off early for having too little money, only to see him fight back to become the party's presumptive nominee.
On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton went from the 'inevitable candidate' to losing the tightest of battles with Barack Obama, who became the first African American nominee for one of the two major parties.
Along the way big names like Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards, and fringe figures like Ron Paul and Mike Gravel has fell by the wayside.
