The answer lies in what type of chronic kidney disease it is and the cause. You need to have a good conversation with your internist or kidney specialist. We commonly see chronic kidney disease as a result of uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes. A review of all your medicines is also needed, as some drugs can cause kidney failure as an unusual side effect. Certain rheumatologic diseases and certain inherent kidney diseases can lead to a normal-looking kidneys on ultrasound with blood studies showing a rise in creatinine, which is a measure of kidney function. Other causes of kidney failure that usually but not always cause a change in appearance of the kidney are numerous infections and kidney stones.
