(CNN) -- One inmate was killed and several others were injured when two fights broke out early Friday at a federal prison in Texas, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said.

The fights started about 7 a.m. in housing units at the Three Rivers, Texas, prison, according to Traci Billingsley, a Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman.

Prison staff immediately responded, she said, and no injuries to staff were reported.

One inmate died and 15 were taken to a hospital, while seven were treated at the prison, she said. She did not know if the inmate died at the prison or at the hospital.

The inmate's name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

"The institution is secure, and at no time was the public in danger," Billingsley said.

The Three Rivers prison is about 80 miles south of San Antonio and about 75 miles northwest of Corpus Christi, according to the federal prison bureau's Web site. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
