Iraq Oil Sector

Iraq is home to the world's third largest oil reserves, and it's among the cheapest oil to produce. This natural resource has been hugely neglected over the years, and with about 45 billion to 110 billion barrels still undiscovered, it is no wonder that major oil companies like Shell, BP, and Total are all queuing up at Iraq's door. It is estimated there have been 465 attacks on oil and gas pipelines, installations and personnel since 2003. Arwa Damon investigates for MME whether Iraqi oil production will ever exceed its current production output of two million barrels per day and become a sector of the economy that is also a sound investment.

Face Time with Hussein al-Shahristani

He was imprisoned in Abu Ghraib for more than ten years and escaped Saddam Hussein's regime during the first Gulf War. Now Hussein al-Shahristani is in charge of Iraq's most vital resource. This week, MME sits down with Iraq's Oil Minister, Hussein al-Shahristani, to discuss the security of this sector and future plans for the development of oil production in Iraq.

In Focus -- Going Green

''Because we can and because we should". Many countries in the region are adopting this phrase and joining the international push to combat climate change by developing ''green'' energy. The New and Renewable Energy sector is growing in the Middle East, where energy demand is extremely close to outstripping supply. But developing renewable energy also demands big money. Marketplace Middle East delves into a multi-billion dollar project that hopes to create a "green city" out of the desert sand.
