PARIS, France (CNN) -- French police Tuesday surrounded a bank in a Paris suburb where two gunmen are believed to be holding six people hostage, police said.

One person inside the bank managed to escape as the gunmen attempted to rob the Credit Lyonnaise bank in Rungis, near Orly Airport.

The person alerted police, who surrounded the bank and are calling for a special unit that deals with hostage intervention.

It is unclear whether police have established contact with the gunmen.

The incident began around 10 am. (4 a.m. ET).
