SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- An American woman kidnapped and held for ransom in the Dominican Republic over the weekend has been rescued, police said.

Nita Susan Rash was recovered in a police operation Monday, and no money was paid to her captors, police spokesman Gen. Ramon Rodriguez Sanchez said. Two men were arrested in the raid.

Rash lived in the northern beach town of Las Galeras for several years with her husband, said Mayor Rafael Bello. U.S. Embassy officials did not respond to phone calls seeking comment, and Rash's hometown and other details were not immediately available.

But in documents from a 2003 lawsuit in the Dominican Republic, she and her husband were listed as executives of D&D Performance Enterprises Inc., a motorcycle exhaust system manufacturer in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bello said kidnappings are virtually unheard of in the area and Rash's abduction has frightened tourists and residents.

"Nobody wants to leave their house," said Pedro Rosario, a pharmacy employee in Las Galeras. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
