CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) -- Egyptian security forces arrested 73 members of the Muslim Brotherhood during nation-wide raids conducted Thursday, a statement posted on the Islamic group's Web site stated. The members of the Muslim Brotherhood -- the main opposition group in Parliament -- were arrested under charges of funding terrorism and laundering money. The Egyptian Interior Ministry declined to immediately comment on the statement to CNN. The group describes the "new wave" of attacks as a "preemptive step against the group ahead of parliamentary elections," which are set for April. Banned by the government, the group supports the creation of an Islamic government. It comprises 20 percent of the parliament seats and remains the most powerful rival to the government, despite a flurry of wide-sweeping arrests of its members in the past year. ![]() Egyptian riot police block off traffic leading to Cairo's Al-Gamaliya district during Muslim Brotherhood protests last week. |
