ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A former suspect in the killing of JonBenet Ramsey was arrested early Saturday in suburban Atlanta, Georgia, after a 911 call of domestic violence, police said.

John Mark Karr is pictured in Bangkok, Thailand, before boarding a plane for the U.S. last year.

John Mark Karr, 42, is charged with battery and obstruction of a 911 call, Lt. Keith Zgonc of the Sandy Springs police said.

Karr was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, last year in connection with the 1996 slaying of the 6-year-old beauty queen.

JonBenet's beaten and strangled body was found December 26, 1996, in the basement of her parents' home in Boulder, Colorado.

Karr was taken to Colorado, but his DNA failed to match that found on the child's underwear.

After his arrest on Saturday, Karr was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital complaining of chest pain, Zgonc said.

Zgonc said it was expected that Karr would be transported to Fulton County Jail later Saturday.

Karr and a woman police identified as his girlfriend were arguing at Karr's father's residence in Sandy Springs, Zgonc said.

Karr's father became involved, and the argument between the two men became "physical," Zgonc said.

When a 911 telephone call from the residence was made, Karr threw the phone on the floor, Zgonc said.

Zgonc did not know who made the phone call. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
