WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Queen Elizabeth II is loved, not only in Britain but also in that nation's former North American colony.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Monday during the queen's six-day U.S. visit finds that eight in 10 Americans have a favorable view of the British monarch. This comes despite the fact that four in 10 believe Britain would be better off without a royal family.

The CNN poll also found that Queen Elizabeth is more popular than either her heir apparent or British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Prince Charles gets a 62 percent favorable rating, while seven in 10 Americans have a favorable view of Blair, a higher rating than his fellow Britons give him.

U.S. public opinion of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles has rebounded slowly but steadily since the 1997 death of Diana, princess of Wales.

Shortly after Diana's death in a Paris car crash, 47 percent of Americans had a positive view of the queen, and fewer than one in three felt favorably toward Charles.

But Americans are split on whether Britain would be better off without a royal family, with 41 percent saying it would, 45 percent saying it would be worse off and 14 percent saying they are unsure.

The poll of 1,028 Americans was conducted Friday through Sunday. It has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
