ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- An armed man was shot Thursday at around 4 p.m. in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, a spokesperson for the Georgia World Congress Center said. A police officer with the Congress Center was involved in the shooting, Atlanta police confirmed. Witnesses said the shabbily dressed man was in the area shouting obscenities and carrying a Bible. He then walked into Centennial Park, across the street from the CNN Center, and waved a gun, witnesses said. Ray Walter, who was sitting in the park about 30 feet away, said he heard multiple shots. He said he took cover behind a pillar erected for the 1996 Summer Olympics. "Five police officers came around the tree [where the man was standing] and yelled ... 'Drop your weapon,'" said Walter. "I heard at least five shots." He said the officers "swarmed" the injured man and ordered him to let the officers see his hands. The injured man appeared to be holding his leg, Walter said. The suspect is in stable condition at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital according to Ashley Grubbs, spokeswoman with the Georgia World Congress Center. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the crime. Thursday's shooting occurred little more than a week after a woman was shot to death inside the CNN Center. ![]() Paramedics load the shooting victim, who witnesses said was brandishing a gun, onto a stretcher in Centennial Olympic Park. |
