MOCKSVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) -- A fire engulfed portions of a central North Carolina nursing home Monday night, killing one resident and injuring 19 others, a county official said. Davie County Assistant Manager Beth Dirks said four of the 19 residents hurt in the fire at Davie Place Nursing Home are in critical condition, while two police officers are being treated for smoke inhalation. Another 30 residents have been transferred to an extended-care facility, Dirks said. "We don't know the cause of the fire, and we have called in the S.B.I. (North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation) to come and assist," Dirks said. "The facility is still standing. However, there is an area that's badly burned." The cause of the fire is being investigated. CNN Radio's Shelby Lin contributed to this story. |
