ELKHART, Indiana (CNN) -- A gunman shot one person before abducting four children and their mother, police said Saturday.

The children -- ages 9, 8, 6 years and 16 months -- were believed to have been abducted by 30-year-old Jerry D. White, according to an Amber Alert.

"The eldest child is a severe asthmatic and requires a ventilator every few hours," the police statement said. "The ventilator was not taken."

The gunshot victim was listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, police said.

Police said they received a call from a woman at 11:30 a.m. saying her boyfriend had been shot overnight at a residence, according to a written police statement.

"After the shooting, the suspect held several people inside the residence captive at gunpoint," the police statement said. "The gunman would not allow anybody to call for assistance for the gunshot victim. He then forced a female and her four children into a vehicle and fled the scene. This is when the call for assistance was received."

The children's mother was identified as 31-year-old Kimberly Walker.

Several interviews have been conducted, police said. White, Walker and the children were believed to be en route to Chicago, Illinois, or in the Chicago area. Chicago police and the FBI were assisting in the investigation, Elkhart police said.

The Amber Alert said the children "are believed to be in extreme danger."

White was believed to be driving either a red 2000 Dodge Intrepid with Illinois license plate 9613090 or a 1993 beige Saturn with Indiana license plate 20T1089, police said.

Those with information were asked to call a police tip line at (317) 234-4636.
