COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- A man was charged with first-degree murder in a suspicious fire at an apartment complex that killed at least two people, authorities said Wednesday. Because investigators found evidence of arson, the probe of the Tuesday morning fire at the 135-unit Castle West Apartments was turned over to police as a homicide investigation, Fire Marshal Brett Lacy said Wednesday. Colorado Springs Police Lt. Rafael Cintron said Gene Johnson, 36, had knowledge of the fire. Johnson was charged with murder in the deaths of the two victims. He was arrested early Wednesday morning. Cintron said more arrests are likely. Fire investigators on Wednesday afternoon were still trying to put out the fire and look for bodies and evidence. The unidentified bodies were still at the scene, and an unknown number of residents remained unaccounted for, officials said. Police said they were looking for a vehicle that might have been involved in the case. The U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is involved in the investigation. |
