(CNN) -- Indra Nooyi solidified her reputation in the business world well before she assumed her post as PepsiCo Inc.'s chief executive officer in October 2006.

In her previous positions at PepsiCo Inc., which include two senior vice president posts and, most recently, the company's chief financial officer, Nooyi led the transformation of the company's global strategy, according to her predecessor, Steven Reinemund.

"Indra's record of transforming PepsiCo speaks for itself, and she has been an invaluable partner and ally throughout my time as CEO," Reinemund said in an August 2006 statement released when PepsiCo Inc. announced that Nooyi, 51, would take the position.

In her 12 years at the company, Nooyi spearheaded several massive changes amid a changed sales environment characterized by an increase in health-conscious consumers looking to buy more juices and water.

These changes -- the divestiture of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, the acquisition of Tropicana, the merger with The Quaker Oats Company, and the spin-off and initial public offering of Pepsi Bottling Group -- helped propel PepsiCo Inc. past Coca-Cola in market value for the first time in December 2005.

"Indra is a supertalent. No doubt, under her leadership, Pepsi will not miss a beat in this transition," John Sicher, editor of trade publication Beverage Digest, told CNN in August.

Nooyi, who was top-ranked in Fortune's 50 most powerful women list for 2006, and No. 4 on Forbes' version, was born in Madras, India.

She holds an undergraduate degree from Madras Christian College, an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta, India, as well as a master's from Yale School of Management. Before joining PepsiCo Inc., she worked at Boston Consulting Group as well as Motorola and the engineering company Asea Brown Boveri.

She serves on several community boards, among them New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the International Rescue Committee.

Nooyi lives in Greenwich, Connecticut, with her husband and two daughters.

Indra Nooyi is PepsiCo. Inc.'s first female CEO.
