AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Ajax returned to the top of of the Dutch standings with a 4-1 thrashing of Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday.

The victory saw them leapfrog old rivals PSV Eindhoven while FC Groningen's 3-2 win against Feyenoord prevented the Rotterdam club from going level on points at the top.
Goals from Luis Suarez and Gabri and a penalty from former Newcastle forward Albert Luque gave Ajax a 3-0 lead.
Mads Junker pulled one back for the Arnhem club before Klaas Jan Huntelaar completed the scoring for the hosts.
In Groningen, Roy Makaay's goal had Feyenoord in front for more than an hour before a crazy last 18 minutes saw Markus Berg and Erik Nevland put Groningen ahead. Nuri Sahin equalized for the visitors but Berg struck again in injury time to snatch victory.
Orlando Engelaar's late goal earned FC Twente a 1-1 draw at Sparta Rotterdam who had led through Sjaak Polak.
