MONACO -- Brazilian Ricardo Gomes has signed a two-year contract to coach French league side Monaco. Until recently Ricardo was coach of Bordeaux -- who on Thursday announced France international Laurent Blanc as their new coach after negotiating Ricardo's release. Ricardo, 42, will be joined by his assistant at Bordeaux, Patrick Colleter, when he takes over his new post in the principality. The Brazilian had been under contract with Bordeaux until 2009, which prompted negotiations between both French league clubs for his release. Ricardo proved a success at Bordeaux, leading them into a Champions League position last season. Former France international Didier Deschamps led Monaco to the Champions League final in 2004, where they lost to Porto. However, they have struggled to produce the same form since then. ![]() Ricardo leaves Bordeaux after leading them into a Champions League place. FOOTBALL MAILBAG
