ALKMAAR, Netherlands -- AZ Alkmaar sunk Newcastle United 2-0 on Thursday to reach the UEFA Cup quarterfinals on the away goals rule after finishing the second knockout round tie 4-4 on aggregate.

The Dutch side made a convincing start and twice served notice to the Newcastle defence before Shota Arveladze netted a cross from Danny Koevermans after 13 minutes.

Ten minutes into the second half, Koevermans doubled the lead when he headed home a corner from Maarten Martens at the near post.

Newcastle, who set out to defend their two-goal advantage from the first leg, had trouble changing their game plan and only Kieron Dyer and Obafemi Martins had chances but missed.

Benfica through

Simao Sabrosa's penalty three minutes from time gave Benfica a 3-1 win over Paris St. Germain and sent them through to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals 4-3 on aggregate.

Sabrosa put Benfica in front after 14 minutes with a shot from inside the penalty area from a cross by striker Nuno Gomes.

Benfica doubled their lead after 27 minutes through Armando Petit's shot from outside the area over the head of PSG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau.

The French team refused to lie down, however, and striker Pauleta, Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 47 goals in 87 internationals, got a goal back with a header after 32 minutes to level the tie at 2-2.

Benfica squandered several chances to finish the tie before Sabrosa's penalty after Youssuf Mulumbu fouled Brazilian defender Leo. Mulumbu was sent off following his second yellow card.
