JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Dale Steyn claimed a match haul of 10 wickets for 93 as South Africa wrapped up a humiliating 358-run win over depleted New Zealand on the fourth day of the first Test on Sunday.
New Zealand, set to score a massive 531 to win, were dismissed for 172 in their second innings giving South Africa their biggest victory by a margin of runs -- two better than when they beat England at Lord's in 1994.
Paceman Steyn snared five for 59 after taking five for 34 in the first innings against a side hit by injuries and illness.
Skipper Daniel Vettori battled to an unbeaten 46 for New Zealand, but the Black Caps were simply outclassed in a match that had started promisingly when they bowled out the hosts for 226.
New Zealand resumed on 57 for three and their plight soon worsened when Steyn sent back Scott Styris (16) who was caught by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.
Brendon McCullum made 26 before fending Steyn to Herschelle Gibbs at gully and Michael Papps, off the field all day Saturday because of illness, made only five before steering Jacques Kallis' first delivery to Graeme Smith at first slip.
Jacob Oram, batting with a runner after suffering a hamstring strain, made 40 and shared a seventh wicket stand of 45 that took the match into the afternoon before he lofted a catch to mid-on off left-arm spinner Paul Harris.
The end came when Iain O'Brien was caught at short leg off Steyn awho then bowled Chris Martin.
The second and final Test starts at Centurion on Friday when New Zealand will be without Shane Bond who suffered an abdominal strain and did not bat in the second innings. E-mail to a friend ![]()
