BEIJING, China -- Former world number one Martina Hingis is through to the second round of the China Open after a 6-2 6-3 win over home player Sun Tiantian on Tuesday.

Hingis enjoyed a successful debut appearamce at the China Open.
Hingis, seeded fifth on her first appearance at the tournament in Beijing, needed just under an hour to beat the world number 142.
The Swiss star now faces another Chinese player, Peng Shuai, as she bids to reach the quarterfinals of a WTA event for the first time in eight tournaments.
Hingis, 26, won in Tokyo in February, but has been hampered by injuries since and made little impression at Wimbledon and the U.S Open.
Five breaks of service helped Hingis see off Sun as she heads for a likely quarterfinal against third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France.
In other action on Tuesday, Japan's Akiko Morigami upset Spanish seventh seed Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-4.
The top four seeds, including defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, all received first-round byes.
