VALENCIA, Spain -- French challenger Areva have been penalized by an America's Cup jury for being in possession of photographs of a rival boat. Areva, will have their sail limit reduced from 45 to 43 for the Louis Vuitton Cup, the preliminary round of the America's Cup which starts on April 16, after the jury found them guilty of two rules violations for accepting photographs of Italian rival boat Luna Rossa Challenge from a media photographer. The photographer was on a boat supplied by the event organisers when he took the images of Luna Rossa. Several photographs were distributed to Areva Challenge team members before they were destroyed. Areva called the incident "a gross error of judgment." The Louis Vuitton Cup decides which one of 11 teams will face defending champion Alinghi in the America's Cup, which starts here in June 23. Luna Rossa said they had accepted an apology from Areva Challenge, who have also been ordered to pay costs in the case. |
