Tori Spelling: I've reconciled with mother

NEW YORK (AP) -- Tori Spelling, who recently gave birth to her first child, says she began reconciling with her mother, Candy, in the last weeks of her pregnancy.

"It was mutual," the 33-year-old actress tells Us Weekly in its April 16 issue. "We both reached out at the same time by phone in the weeks before I had Liam."

Their 9-month estrangement was juicy gossip in the tabloids, with mother and daughter sitting apart during a tribute to famed TV producer Aaron Spelling at the Emmy Awards last August.

Spelling, who produced shows such as "Beverly Hills, 90210," which starred his daughter, died last June at 83 after suffering a stroke. Other shows he created include "Charlie's Angels" and "Dynasty."

Candy Spelling was in the delivery room when Tori Spelling gave birth to 6-pound, 6-ounce Liam Aaron McDermott by Caesarean section at a Los Angeles hospital last month.

"When she walked through that hospital door when I was in labor, it was like I had just seen her yesterday," Spelling says. "We both started to cry and hug, and I said, 'I love you, Mommy,' and she said, 'I love you.' That was it. I wish my dad got to see it, but I think he is looking down on us."

What led to the two-sided silent treatment?

"Nothing really transpired between us," Tori Spelling says. "After reading so many stories, I think we both thought, 'Does she hate me? Did I do something?' We were both scared to reach out to each other. Now that we're together, we realize that there is no feud."

Spelling says she's sad that she lost a year with her mother. "There's an empty spot in your heart when family is missing from your life," she says.

Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, star in the reality series "Tori & Dean: Inn Love" on Oxygen Media Corp.'s Oxygen network. The couple are seen opening their own bed and breakfast on the show.

Rachael Ray helps out at tornado-hit school

ENTERPRISE, Alabama (AP) -- Rachael Ray made sure the students who lost eight classmates and their school in a tornado got a senior prom.

The celebrity chef planned the menu and helped prepare dinner at Enterprise High School's prom, according to a statement Thursday from publicist Georgianna Dente. The star of the syndicated "Rachael Ray" show paid for the dance, which was shot for an episode to air April 30.

"The students of Enterprise High are so courageous, given all that they've gone through," Ray, 38, said in the statement. "When I heard about what happened to their school and classmates, we wanted to help."

"The prom was all about celebrating their accomplishments and honoring the classmates who tragically lost their lives," she said.

Publicist Charlie Dougiello said Mandy Moore performed three songs at the end of the prom.

Earlier in the day, Ray appeared with Gov. Bob Riley and Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell to greet students at an assembly.

The prom, held at Fort Rucker, was themed "Caught in a Moment." Photographs of seniors Jamie Vidensek and Michael Tompkins -- two of the students killed -- lined the dance floor, the Eagle reported.

Senior Mitchell Baker, 17, said the prom was bittersweet after the death of his friends.

"It makes it a little harder for me," Baker, 17, told The Dothan Eagle newspaper. "I'm used to all of them being around."

The governor signed a bill Thursday that appropriates $32 million to rebuild Hillcrest Elementary School and Enterprise High School. The schools were damaged in the tornado March 1. Classes resumed March 14 at a community college.

Kevin Costner sues promoter

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Kevin Costner has sued a music promoter, claiming the company reneged on a contract to back the actor's fledgling music career.

Costner, 52, filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Superior Court. The suit accuses Mahee Worldwide Ventures Inc. of breach of contract and fraud. Costner is seeking damages in excess of $8.5 million.

Costner is the lead singer in the Kevin Costner Band, for which he also writes songs. He also has a company, Kevin's Music LLC, that manages his musical activities.

The lawsuit claims Costner's company and the promoter entered into a two-year agreement in January that would allow the actor's band to perform in as many as five concerts each year. Mahee also would create and maintain a Web site marketing Costner's band, the lawsuit said.

But Mahee has failed to hold up its end of the deal, according to the lawsuit.

"Defendants made numerous promises regarding their capabilities to promote Mr. Costner's music and (their) willingness to pay for the right to do so," the lawsuit stated. "Instead of following through on their promises, defendants continued to make false promises and ultimately disappeared ..."

An e-mail message left for Mahee was not immediately returned Thursday.
